snapshots along the way: broken to Passover

1 Then Pilate took Jesus and flogged him. And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and arrayed him in a purple robe. They came up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and struck him with their hands. Pilate went out again and said to them, “See, I am bringing him out to you that you may know that I find no guilt in him.” So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold the man!” When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no guilt in him.” The Jews[a] answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has made himself the Son of God.” When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid. He entered his headquarters again and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. 10 So Pilate said to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?” 11 Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin.”

12 From then on Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.” 13 So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic[b] Gabbatha. 14 Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour.[c] He said to the Jews, “Behold your King!” 15 They cried out, “Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” 16 So he delivered him over to them to be crucified.  John 19:1-16 (ESV)

While the preparations were under way for Passover, Jesus was preparing to sit at a different table.

Pilate might have thought he was the ultimate judge on the judgment seat at Gabbatha, but the real Judge would be raised up at Golgatha.

He knew there was no other way for us to pay the price for our costly sin.

Don’t you realize that He tried every other way

Throughout the Scriptures, God continued to try and save as many of His people as He could.

Through deliverance, answered prayer, prophets, the Kings – God never stopped rescuing His people from themselves.

He  knew it would take an ultimate act only by His hand to release the freedom only He could command.

He could not pass-over the sins of the world any longer.

The Passover blood, previously seen as a symbol of death passing over became the full blown expression of His heart accepting the sacrifice of His own Son’s live giving blood for us to be restored.

As His life flowed out, our life, our real life, could begin.

The Lamb went willingly to the cross, enduring the betrayals, strikes, blows, beating, humiliation & mocking which we should have received.

For even on the cross, in dreadful pain, He could not help trying to save those he came to set free.

The thieves, His best friend, His mother…. and all of us yet to be.

The cost?  One sacrifice paid the debt humanity had built up against the very one who set the plan in motion from the beginning of time.

He was broken, to death to appease the Law.

And for a split second after He breathed His last labored breath, and gave Himself up to His plan, the enemy thought he had won.

50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit.

51 And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, & the rocks were split. 52 The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, 53 and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city & appeared to many. 54 When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake & what took place, they were filled with awe and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!” Matthew 27:50-54

And with His death, there was immediate victory released, although the best was yet to come.   The soldiers stationed at the cross believed.

Can you imagine? You were one of the soldiers who mocked Him, flogged Him, stabbed His with your spear or forced Him to carry the cross…and after you did your job, your eyes were opened to the truth of who it was you helped to kill?

God wasn’t surprised.

It is only when we become aware of just how broken we are, and how dirty our hands are that we can acknowledge Jesus as our desperately needed Savior.

His broken body, His precious blood.

Given up for you and I.

The first Communion lived out only hours after He revealed it was to come to His disciples.

Broken so God can now Passover our sins, because the full price was paid in Jesus.

when the road seems too long…the wise men

As long as the road would have seemed to Joseph & Mary, there were those on a quest who took even longer to arrive in Bethlehem.

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem village, Judah territory— this was during Herod’s kingship—a band of scholars arrived in Jerusalem from the East. They asked around, “Where can we find and pay homage to the newborn King of the Jews? We observed a star in the eastern sky that signaled his birth. We’re on pilgrimage to worship him.”

Matthew 2:1-2

Then the star appeared again, the same star they had seen in the eastern skies. It led them on until it hovered over the place of the child. They could hardly contain themselves: They were in the right place! They had arrived at the right time! They entered the house and saw the child in the arms of Mary, his mother. Overcome, they kneeled and worshiped him. Then they opened their luggage and presented gifts: gold, frankincense, myrrh.

Matthew 2:9b-11

There are a lot of different interpretations of these verses.

Some say there were likely only three wise men, as could be assumed based on the number of gifts they gave. We know there were there gifts, hence the three wise men. However, I am guessing with the long hike they underwent, they had to have had extra supplies, camels and servants, so I would not have been only three camels carrying three men.

Some say they must have followed the star to Jerusalem, or even Nazareth, for two reasons:

1. Jesus was named at the temple in Jerusalem on His eighth day (Luke 2:21-38). Not sure the Carpenters would have returned to Bethlehem after heading there, so it is likely they stayed at a B&B/hotel or possibly with family at Jerusalem.

2. Herod was the appointed King over the whole of Israel. I believe the coming slaughter of the male babes2 and under may have had a larger scope….not just limited to Bethlehem, as it clearly includes ‘and surrounding districts’ in the passage (Matthew 2:16-18) So Jerusalem might have also fallen under the target range, as all infants were named at the temple.

So, I think Jerusalem was more likely if they arrived with a younger Jesus as a newborn to two month old. Mary would have had to wait a certain amount of time after giving birth before traveling (her purification period), so after three months away from home, they either were met by the Wise Men in Jerusalem, or were back in their home in Nazareth.

(Either way, in order for the Word to have written in a warning, they were within the danger zone. More on that tomorrow…)

Now, the star heralding Jesus’ arrival & birth has been traditionally called the star of Bethlehem, but was in fact not called that in the Word. Rather the ‘star in the eastern sky.’

I think God aligned the planets to ignite the passion in these wise men’s hearts to find Him, in the form of Jesus, through this star.

The argument over the when and where of this part of the story some times misses the point.

When God is calling, our response is what matters. It may take longer for many of us to hear, or see or sense Him reaching out to us.

Like the wise men, the first important part is to never stop seeking Him.

The second important part?
Follow Him.

There is one more third element to the wise men: they brought gifts indicative of who they had come to worship.

They didn’t bring baby clothes, or infant toys to Jesus, although in the earthly side of things they would be most appropriate.

They brought Kingly gifts that recognized three major characteristics of the King they had come to worship.

Gold- to represent His Heavenly Kingship & acknowledge His royal claim to the throne of Israel.

Frankincense- to represent Jesus as our High Priest. This was an aroma offered up in worship at the temple, incense which was used at the time.

Myrrh- to represent both His Kingly Anointing, as it was used as anointing oil for kings in those days, and His impending Sacrifice, as myrrh was also used in the embalming process when one died.

These gifts were not only spot on in their recognition of who they were being given to, they were costly.

The gifts represent a great journey and effort of time, resources and money. Not just a nice present, they were major offerings being laid before Jesus.

We too need to be mindful of what we offer Jesus. We need to look past the physical baby to see the Holy God inside, and adjust our offerings accordingly.

The wise men knew only their best would do to offer the king.

The shepherds did the same, as all they had to offer was spreading the good news.

May we too never stop seeking Jesus, and offering Him our best in worship.

His favorite

My son & I were both changed by his grade three teacher that year.

Mrs. M. had a tool in her teaching belt which caused several hundred former students and many current ones to show up at her retirement ceremony, in a school with classroom sizes averaging of 20-25.

Each and every child she taught believed they were her favorite.

And she treated each as if they were.

My son came out of his shell and began to blossom in her classroom. Since he was her favorite, he tried extra hard to do his best in class and didn’t disappoint her with his efforts.

I was blessed to be able to get to know Mrs. M. through lunch monitoring and volunteering at that school…and learn that valuable lesson which I have tried to emulate every day when I am at work, the bus, with friends or at home:

Everyone of us is God’s favorite.
Beloved.
Treasured.

And as such, we should all treat one another as such.

If I can fathom that I am God’s favorite, I can become secure enough in my relationship with Him not to be threatened when He shows others favor as well.

There is no mistake.
I am God’s favorite.
And so are you.

You don’t lay down your life for just anyone.

You need to love them more than your life to do so.

By following the hard path to the cross, God did just that: took the sins of His favorites and made us all sparkly clean again.

His Word is filled with His love, care and devotion for His favorites.

The next time you are feeling blue….try heading to a mirror and stating this truth out loud over yourself:

I am God’s favorite.

Treating everyone like they’re your favorite? It works. I did just that in the next job I worked at after leaving the school as a Batista, and I can still walk into both locations, be greeted by customers & staff by name-despite it being over three years so since I left that industry.  My favorites all recognize me still, most stopping to chat when I go in to grab a tea or latte. I don’t share this story to brag, but to demonstrate how much being treated with kindness and respect over something as simple as giving a client their coffee can go a long way to making someone’s day.

God treats each of us better than we deserve, but He delights to because you are His favorite.

Our God is so much more amazing that we can imagine or grasp, just from the view point of knowing He loves each of us- the billion or more of His creations on this planet- individually & personally.

Need good news to start your week?

You are God’s favorite.

Since He is an all knowing God, there must be more to each of us than meets the eye if our designer calls us His favorite.

That alone is worth a smile on a hard day!
