Breath of Heaven (Mary’s Song)

Breath of heaven
Hold me together
Be forever near me
Breath of heaven

Breath of heaven
Light up my darkness
Pour over me Your holiness
For You are holy

Breath of Heaven

I have a difficult time imagining being in Mary’s sandals.

Being visited by an angel who informs me that I will bear the Deliverer, the Messiah my people have been long waiting for, despite my not knowing a man?
I don’t think i would have been able to speak, let alone humbly agreeing to the unfolding of His plan which included me as a main player.

I would have been too struck by the angel’s beauty, and the holiness he would shine after being in His Presence.

I honestly would only see my stark lack, in the light of his radiance.

Which is why this Christmas song grabs my heart tightly each time I hear it.

When I was pregnant with my first child, I was a tight bundle of tense nerves. Scared of giving birth, frightened of being a bad mother, tentative as to how to handle everything.

God got me through it despite my fears.

He held me together, and knowing He was with me allowed me to trust Him for whatever may come.

He covered me with His grace and mercy, and made me glow within with His love and holiness as I pressed in to the Promise Keeper.

Because He is who He is, I can handle whatever is up ahead, for He holds me together, and loves me each step of the way.

This newer Christmas song, compared to the century old classics, has resounded within me from the first time I heard it, and it continues to strike a chord in the heart of each one longing to be a mother who hears it.

I had the privilege of singing it at my church one year, and it wrecked me. The faith this song demonstrates fully grasps both the wonder of Christmas and the reality of our humanity.

He knew how much we needed Him, face to face. Through His willing servant Mary’s obedience, His plan began to unfurl to save the world.

And the Breath of Heaven came upon her, and she was with child.

Wow.

And this song echoes the wonder we each face as we realize God came down to our time and place, leaving the wonders of heaven to move into the womb of a young woman.
